The ninth episode of 13 in de oorlog (13 at War) is called Arnhem. German troops in Russia and North Africa are driven back, but it's still a long way to go to Western Europe. That's why many people are hoping for an invasion from England into Bretagne or Calais or perhaps even on the Dutch coast. To prevent such an attack from succeeding, Adolf Hitler erects ten thousands of bunkers with guns and millions of landmines along the Atlantic and North Sea coast. Those are stormed by thousands of American, British and Canadian soldiers on 6 June 1944. After they successfully break through the German lines of defence, the liberation of Europa has begun. The 10-year-old Joost from Arnhem and his granddad mark the progress of the Allied Forces with colored pushpins on a wall map. The Allies devise a daring plan to conquer the bridges across the Meuse, Waal and Rhine rivers: the Battle of Arnhem.
