What use is a servant, who doesn’t serve?
The Servant Wife

2016

La Serva Padrona is a comical opera composed in 1733 by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi to a libretto by Gennaro Antonio Federico after the play of the same name by Jacopo Angello Nelli. Maarten van der Duin translated and adapted the Italian recitatives into drama scenes in English for The Servant Wife, a coproduction of Stephen Ellery and Lukasz Biela, with performances in Cardiff (Wales) and Leytonstone (London). In 18‑th century Naples servant girl Serpina has her eye on Uberto, the master of the house, who doesn't know how to handle her unacceptable behaviour.

What a joy! A fantastic experience

You treat me like some sort of maid.
The Servant Wife

Wicked, great, funny, very enjoyable

Apparently, there is someone else...
The Servant Wife

Text excerpt in English to replace the recitative Or che fatto ti sei dalla mia parte from the opera The Servant Wife. Servant maid Serpina wants her colleague Vespone to pretend to be her lover in order to make her master Uberto jealous.

Side-splittingly funny and brilliantly performed

Brian Cook

That man is a maniac.
The Servant Wife

Text excerpt in English to replace the recitative Ah! Quanto mi sa male from Pergolesi's opera The Servant Wife. Uberto is seriously worried, when he meets the apparent lover of his servant maid Serpina, who in reality is her colleague Vespone.

Immense pleasure for ears, eyes and heart

The opera was full of comedy and refreshingly accessible to all! Please do more!
