Romans & Batavi is the second episode of the television series The Story of the Netherlands beginning with the arrival of Julius Caesar and his Roman legions in the Low Countries. The indigenous inhabitants are subjugated by force or eradicated at the first sign of resistance. To maintain quiet and peace in the multinational empire, watchtowers and fortresses are built at the border and loyal tribes are relocated to the cleared areas. One of the most reliable and formidable peoples are the Batavi who have fought many battles in the service of the Romans. When these fighters from Dutch Batavia and Guelders revolt against Rome, the future of the Roman Empire momentarily hangs by a thread.
