The Coffee Cantata is the only comic opera by composer Johann Sebastian Bach. In one act he ridicules the addiction to coffee, which was a raving decadent fashion among young ladies in the 1700's. In the adaptation by Maarten van der Duin the German lyrics seamlessly alternate with interjections in English, which provide the opera with a refreshingly modern perspective. The opera was produced by the Ellery Touring Opera and in summer 2018 performed as a double bill with Bastien and Bastienne by the London Gala Orchestra in Cardiff (Wales) and at festivals in Leytonstone (London), Brighton (East Sussex) and Frome (Somerset).
