Kids of Courage

2015-2017

Internationally awarded television series for children about World War Two. This European co-production was broadcast in numerous countries under different titles: Wojna i ja (Poland), Les enfants courage (France), Der Krieg und Ich (Germany) and Kids of Courage. The stories are based on authentic diaries and letters of children from all over Europe and show from a multinational perspective how they experienced the horrors of war, the air raids, the hunger, but also the day-to-day life between 1933 and 1945. In eight episodes dramatized scenes are combined with animations and archival footage. German teenager Anton, for example, is very keen on joining the Hitler Youth, but his father refuses to sign the parental approval. In Scotland the 15-year-old Calum doesn't worry too much about the war, until the first Luftwaffe bombers appear above his town. From Norway to Czechoslovakia and from France to Russia, children are confronted with life-altering events.

The result is incredibly strong. The series is gripping, maybe precisely because it manages without the usual horror images.
