The third episode of Small Hands in a Big War is called The Mountain. The 10-year-old Tobias is a patriotic Austrian shepherd's boy, who is forced to lead Italian soldiers to the tops of the Alps, from where they will attack his fellow-countrymen. They overcome avalanches and extreme cold with inventiveness and teamwork, which sparks an unspoken friendship between them. Because of the shepherd's boy the Italians have more and more sympathy and compassion for their Austrian enemies, who experience the same difficulties at high altitude as they do.
